KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) grew by 2.0% in November 2019 compared with the same month in 2018, according to the Statistics Department.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the growth was driven by the increase in the index of manufacturing by 2.5%, electricity (1.6%) and mining (0.5%).
On a year-on-year basis, the manufacturing sector output rose by 2.5% in November 2019 after recording a growth of 2.2% in the previous month.
“The major sub-sectors contributing to the increase in November 2019 were transport equipment and other manufactures (4.3%), non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products (3.7%) and petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (2.0%),” he said in a report released today.
The mining sector output also grew 0.5% in November 2019 compared with the same period of the previous year.
“The growth was due to the increase in the natural gas index (3.7%), while crude oil and condensate index declined by 3.3%,” Mohd Uzir said.
The electricity sector output increased by 1.6% in November 2019 against the same month in 2018.
Meanwhile, the department said Malaysia’s manufacturing sales grew by 2.3% in November 2019 to RM73.5 bil compared with RM71.8 bil reported a year ago.
The year-on-year growth was driven by the increase in non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products (6.8%), transport equipment and other manufactures products (5.3 %) and electrical and electronics products (1.6%).
“Total employees engaged in the manufacturing sector during the month was 1,089,336 persons, an increase of 1.2% or 13,411 persons compared with 1,075,925 persons in November 2018.
“Salaries and wages paid went up 3.1% to RM3.96 bil in November 2019 against the same month of the preceding year,” he said.
The sales value per employee grew by 1.1% to RM67,430 in November 2019 compared with the same month in 2018, while the average monthly salaries and wages per employee amounted to RM3,640. – Jan 10, 2020 Bernama
