“Why delay the appointment of new AG, Mr PM?”

THE delay of appointing a new Attorney-General (AG) or the extension of the current AG Tan Sri Idrus Harun tenure is raising question as the fate of the “court cluster” draws closer.

Idrus, who is the brother of Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun, will see his tenure end today (March 6) after being appointed on March 6, 2020, if no announcement is made about an extension.

Is it true that the Cabinet and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob are not happy with the AG as he is still prosecuting powerful individuals from the “court cluster”? Is the Government planning appoint an AG that will take care UMNO’s interest?

The post cannot be vacant

In any case, a Government in general, has many decisions to make legally. So, who will advise the Government when there no AG? Without the top legal adviser to the Government,  many decisions will have to be delayed.

A successor should have been identified some time ago and it is embarrassing for us to go through this situation. If this is the case, will we have a situation where there is a delay in appointing a new Inspector-General of Police?

The PM needs to remember that there is also no “caretaker AG” post provided under the Federal Constitution.

For such an important role, we must know what is the reason for the delay. The nation deserves an answer. – March 6, 2022
