Europe wildfires: More than 250,000 people forced to flee their homes

MORE than 250,000 people have been forced to leave homes and holiday resorts as fast-moving wildfires sweep parts of France and Spain.

In France’s Gironde and on the Cap Ferret peninsula, evacuations included nursing home residents as crews fought overnight to protect property; in Spain, bulldozers cut firebreaks to slow blazes moving towards Madrid.—July 25, 2026
