DAP: Don’t delay anti-hopping law, “frogs” affected Sabah the worst

SABAH DAP lauded the Government’s decision to table the anti-hopping law on April 11 and referred it as a milestone for Malaysia’s democracy.

“This is a bipartisan effort to end the charade caused by ‘political frogs’. Let us put an end to this and rebuild Sabah.

“With that, Sabah DAP will continue to work hard with our representatives and we promise to stand behind the people in building Sabah’s future and generations to come,” it said, in a statement.

After much delay on the matter and threats to revoke the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Government and Opposition, the Government announced that they would table the anti-hopping law next month, in a special Parliamentary sitting.

“I had the opportunity to discuss this with the prime minister and we have agreed to hold a meeting on April 11 for us to debate on the anti-hopping bill.

“Under Regulation 11 (3), it is indeed the power and the right of the prime minister to discuss with the speaker but the date was set within 14 days,” Bernama reported Law Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar as saying three days ago.

Reminiscing the past, Sabah DAP said that the region understood all too well on how ‘political frogs’ could damage the democratic process, starting with the collapse of the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) government in the 1990s following a series of defections.

“In 2020, Parti Warisan Sabah led by Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal also suffered the same problem. This culture must be swept out forever for the sake of Sabah and Malaysia’s future,” it stated.

 Fragmented Opposition a bane

Training their guns against former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Senior Minister (International Trade and Industries) Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin who also defected from Pakatan Harapan, Sabah DAP said the duo gave various excuses to justify their role in the infamous Sheraton Move which collapsed the Pakatan Harapan Government.

“The excuse is always for the sake of the people and start criticising their former partners but the people are smart as they can clearly see that they are betraying the mandate given to them,” it quipped.

With that Sabah DAP urged the Opposition to unite as both the Melaka and Johor state elections have shown that UMNO was making a strong comeback.

“The people are speculating that the next could be Sabah. We’ve reiterated numerous times that only a united Opposition will stand a chance to defeat and stop UMNO once again.

“However, the current situation is disappointing. If we continue to be divided, UMNO’s return to Sabah is only a matter of time,” it remarked. – March 27, 2022
