WHETHER he is riding on religion or otherwise in his latest persecution of KK Super Mart, UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has certainly deepened old wounds by claiming victory in the latest ham & cheese sandwich saga.
Backed by a JAKIM (Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) statement yesterday (Jan 13), the Merlimau state assemblyman has accused the 24-hour convenience store of deception by displaying fake halal accreditation – an action which is detrimental to Muslim consumers.
“I wish to ask KK Mart how a big company can be so careless by not checking on your vendor and how you can ensure that the halal accreditation on the product is truly valid,” he lambasted on his Facebook post.
“Go ahead to sell sandwich or anything that is not halal but the abuse of the halal logo stamp to increase the acceptance of your product is a betrayal and fraud against Muslim consumers.
“I therefore urge that all these people be severely punished for this fraud! So to my friends out there, you know what you should do next.”
Following an on-site inspection with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) on Jan 10, JAKIM said the product in question did not have a Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) while its producer is not a SPHM holder.

“Therefore, the company’s action of printing the Malaysian halal logo on the product label is an offence under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, namely the Trade Descriptions (Halal Certification and Marking) Order 2011 and legal action has been taken by KPDN.”
As in the sock-gate saga where all hell broke loose till the wisdom of Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia eventually quelled the temperature, the latest ham & cheese sandwich episode has again sparked war of words between UMNO Youth and its DAP counterpart.
This came about after newly minted DAP Socialist Youth chief Woo Kah Leong chided the Akmal for “playing both hero and enforcer”.
“The university (Universiti Malaya) has taken immediate action to close the outlet where the issue originated from and an investigation has begun.

“DAPSY has never supported traders who cheat with halal labels. Traders who cheat should be dealt with by the authorities based on the law … However, one should not try to take over the role of the agency or enforcement authority, so let JAKIM and others respond professionally to eliminate any annoyance.”
However, the Melaka Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman ticked off Woo who is also the Pasir Bedamar state assemblyman in Perak for accusing him of wanting to be a hero.
This is a matter when someone tries to deceive and betray the trust of Muslims with a fake halal label even though in reality they don’t have the halal certificate at all.
Does DAPSY also support such unlawful action? And what is more important is this matter of the responsibility of a Muslim to others to convey what is right.
If you don’t understand the sensitive issues of Muslims and Malays in this country, it is better not to be a leader! Better then for you to sell ham sandwiches, bro. – Jan 14, 2025
