Already eyeing for plush GLC posts? PSM asks Umno Youth

PARTI Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) today queried Umno Youth over the latter’s suggestion for the party’s deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to be appointed as Finance Minister.

“Is Umno Youth planning to lobby Mohamad Hassan, once he becomes Finance Minister, access to lucrative posts at Government-linked companies (GLC)?

“If that is not the case, can Umno members swear an oath that they will not take up any positions at GLCs from now on?” asked its central committee member Sharan Raj in a statement.

Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki as proposing Mohamad Hasan to become the next Finance Minister.

He claimed that Mohamad Hasan understands the people’s plight and the latter would properly address their needs on automatic loan moratorium and withdrawal from the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), via the i-Citra programme.

Let workers’ union rep in

Touching the suggestion, Sharan said it was an open secret that Umno despised former Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz as the latter refused to give its youth leaders posts at GLC.

Usually, such appointments are done by the Finance Ministry (MOF) via the MOF Inc, EPF, Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB).

On that note, Sharan said that it was best if such posts were given to the workers’ union of the respective GLCs to eradicate cronyism, nepotism and patronage politics.

He added that those from its own workers’ unions would not be tempted to indulge in such practices as it would affect their rice bowls.

“And I urge Umno Youth to consider that. History has shown that political appointees have resulted in GLCs having suffered losses and taxpayers’ fund was used to bail them out.

“Despite bailouts, ordinary employees bore the brunt of it by getting retrenched like those from Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAS). Workers are the backbone of any organisation but also the first people to lose their jobs due to the mismanagement by political appointees,” Sharan remarked. – Aug 23, 2021
