Animal lovers rejoice at successful candlelight vigil to seek justice for Kopi, stray dogs & cats

Letter to editor

ANIMAL rights groups in Malaysia had a successful mass gathering last night (Jan 11) with nearly 500 attendees showing their support at our candlelight vigil to commemorate Kopi – the beloved stray dog who captured hearts nationwide in a viral video playing with a kitten was allegedly shot dead during a culling operation in Besut, Terengganu.

People from various states across Malaysia came together to demonstrate solidarity for a critical cause.

The vigil was organised by the Malaysian Animal Welfare Association (MAWA) in collaboration with the Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) and the Global Human Rights Federation (GHRF) with the support of various NGO coalitions.

Our goal was to stand against the brutal killing and abuse of animals – a distressing issue that has been increasingly prevalent by either municipal or individuals.

We are urging the government to adopt the humane approach of trap, neuter and release (TNR) instead of resorting to the inhumane practice of killing stray animals.

The recent rise in such incidents is unacceptable. Many may have seen a shocking video on TikTok where an individual demonstrates how to poison and kill monkeys, hence highlighting a glaring failure in our policies and enforcement.

As the current Animal Welfare Act of 2015 is outdated, we demand immediate reforms and amendments to ensure it adequately protects animals.

This is not just an isolated issue but oner that reflects a national concern requiring the government’s urgent attention and action.

A memorandum was handed over to the MPs at the Parliament on Nov 12, 2023 on the matter. We must work together to end the senseless killing of stray animals in Malaysia and foster a more compassionate society. – Jan 12, 2025
