“If a teacher’s discipline is weak, if they frequently miss school within a year, I want to cancel (the time-based promotion). We must scrutinise this, but I believe 90 percent of teachers won’t have an issue,” he said while speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Malaysian National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) today.
According to Anwar, a teacher’s duty is to educate people and instill humanity within them, which requires teachers to have a sense of love and care for their students.
The premier emphasised that teachers’ welfare must be protected while also making necessary changes.
“Malaysia has the capacity to elevate the nation’s status in terms of economy, politics, social, and education because the basic strength is there. To advance, we cannot continue with the current slow culture; we must be firm,” he said.
“Even now, I still remember and respect the contributions of my teachers from Sekolah Cheruk Tok Kun, Bukit Mertajam Boys School, Malay College Kuala Kangsar, and University of Malaya (UM), because without them and my parents, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
He added that to boost the national economy, special emphasis needs to be placed on mastering English as the country moves towards digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) while maintaining that Bahasa Malaysia remains the national official language. – July 13, 2024
