A CHINA tourist loses wallet in a Semenyih supermarket. Finder accused of stealing RM10,000 in cash from the wallet.
That is the gist of the missing money that has gripped social media the last few days. But with everything that goes viral, there is a fair bit of misinformation and racial elements à la Malaysia attached to it.
There was a narrative that the poor delivery driver was being wrongly punished for his act of honesty by returning a missing wallet. In fact, the Chinese woman and her husband were even accused as faking the theft.
The latest development is such that the police have arrested a delivery driver on suspicion of theft on June 18. The plot twist that has shone a different light on the incident is the fact the coppers acted based on CCTV footage from the supermarket where the wallet was found.
Apparently, the wallet was discovered by the couple’s child who handed it to the mother who then placed it in her handbag instead of handing it over to the supermarket’s cashier counter/customer services or passing it to the police.
No attempt was made to contact the rightful owner till the cops came calling. Only when the cops made contact based on CCTV footage (of the and suspects’ car registration plate) did the delivery driver come forward to hand over the missing wallet.
The bottom line is that he did NOT do so on his own volition.
The latest version of events was shared by Facebooker Ahmad Nazrul who advised citizens to immediately hand over any lost and found items to the relevant authorities to avoid suspicion of foul play.
The current affairs commenter also pointed out the many half-truths and false accusations floating around social media which were unhelpful towards the resolving of this issue.
The addition of nasty racial element to the narrative has only muddied the waters, thus causing tension and unease among citizens.
The post has generated 3K Likes, 1.3K comments and 220 shares at time of writing, denoting that this case is hot kopitiam chatter at the moment.
One commenter verbalised what was on the minds of many other netizens. Why did the suspect only hand over the missing item when called by the cops? The CCTV footage was also cited as damning evidence.
Netizens were advised not to jump to conclusions nor cast aspersions on the China tourist who was labelled a scammer.
Stating that RM10,000 is a lot of money, it was surmised that many Malaysians would be complaining incessantly if they lost just RM100 while travelling abroad.

The latest CCTV footage also seems to make the scenario much clearer. One commenter argued that the video evidence makes the wife’s actions of placing the wallet in her own handbag highly suspicious.
Even if there was intention to hand the wallet over to the police, there will be suspicions should any item is reported missing.

Speaking from first-hand experience working in the hospitality industry, one observer cautioned that if a person wanted to inspect or return a missing item, it is advisable to ensure there is a witness to vouch that nothing was taken.
This is to avoid one of being falsely accused by the guests of looking to capitalise on the missing items.

There were those who still questioned the tourist’s need for such huge amounts of cash, when most prefer to use cashless modes of payment.

Likewise, there were also those who queried whether RM10,000 in cash could actually fit in the wallet.

This though was said to be normal for Chinese tourists according to one who was used to dealing with them.

The CCTV footage clears up a lot of the misinformation floating about regarding this incident. However, it does show how all manner of conjecture can cloud the real issue at hand. Worse yet are those who stir things up with racial elements designed to cause mischief.

Let the authorities complete the investigations and may the truth prevail. That sometimes can be difficult when social media is involved. – June 20, 2026
