Building a better content talent pipeline for the future of Malaysia

WHILE content creators play an important role in facilitating the sustenance of good practices and drive professional standard, especially in the communications and multimedia content industry, many of them are still not aware of the importance of content curation and self-regulation.

Having that in mind, an independent self-regulatory body that is registered under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Content Forum is embarking on a content education journey starting from the grassroots level in a bid to empower future industry leaders of tomorrow.

The first chapter begins with a three-year collaboration with School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), that was signed and sealed with a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), aimed at exploring opportunities to develop, support and enrich the research activities, educational programmes and training in the respective fields of expertise.

“While we actively engage with present industry players, the Content Forum believes that it is also crucial to empower the minds of future industry leaders through collaborations with institutions of higher learning,” explained Content Forum executive director Mediha Mahmood.

“These students will be the ones taking the helm in content creation across all industries soon, be it in advertising, broadcasting, scriptwriting, journalism and others. We want to initiate and encourage the culture of responsible and ethical content creation and consumption, overall educating the importance of content self-regulation from the ground up,” she continued.

She added that university students, especially those taking courses in relation to the content industry should also be familiarised with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Content Code (Content Code), a set of guidelines created by the Content Forum outlining best practices and ethical standards for content creation and consumption across all platforms.

As part of the MOA, the Content Forum will facilitate the incorporation of the Content Code into the relevant academic programmes in USM, provide training and awareness programmes tailored to meet the needs of the university.

Additionally, the Content Forum will also be advising USM on the rules, guidelines and best practices pertaining to content governance in Malaysia. To this extend, training and awareness programmes tailored to the needs of the institution will also be provided. – Feb 5, 2022
