#BukaParlimen: Embattled Gov’t pressured to reconvene Parliament

WITH Istana Negara issuing a royal decree that the Parliament must be reconvened soon, netizens lauded the decision by taking it on social media.

Trending #BukaParlimen on Twitter, lawmakers and the public commended the monarch’s timely intervention and urged the beleaguered Government to heed the call.

“The royal decree is indisputable. The Yang Di-Pertuan Agong al-Sultan Abdullah Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah and Council of Rulers unanimously agreed that Parliamentary Sovereignty guarantees good governance.

“Do we have a constitutional crisis at hand?” asked Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

Last night, the Agong said that he was of the opinion that the Parliament should be reconvened as soon as possible to allow MPs to debate issues such as the Emergency and National Recovery Plan.

His Majesty issued the statement after chairing a special Conference of Rulers meeting yesterday at the Istana Negara, following several meetings held with chiefs of political parties, the Special Independent Committee on the Emergency 2021 and other top Government officials last week.

“The Agong also stressed the need for a strong and stable Government that can work effectively to contain COVID-19 and revive the economy.

“The Parliament is an important platform for elected leaders to meet and discuss various issues, particularly those pertaining to the pandemic,” the Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin was reported saying, in a statement.

Time’s up, Mr PM

On that note, user Sharifah Amani said the Government should reconvene the Parliament if they care about the people’s suffering.

User Potteh_23 stated: “The only backdoor government that depends on COVID-19 to sustain their power, the end is near for them #BukaParlimen #TamatDarurat.”

Another user called R Selva Rajandra said that small and medium enterprises are in dire state and the Parliament needs to be in session so leaders can find way to save the economy.

User Penat added that the Government should practice democracy since they have repeatedly been urged to reconvene the Parliament.

On related matter, Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik lauded Istana Negara’s decision and promised that he would do his best to voice out issues affecting the rakyat when the Parliament is reconvened.

“I thank the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay rulers for their collective decision. I will do my best to save Malaysians and the country as per Their Majesties’ decree,” the former Education Minister remarked. – June 17, 2021.
