CALL it a twist of fate.

The board of Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd has welcomed back its deputy group chairman Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib with open arms after the latter has been found innocent of an allegation of conflict of interest made against him and Karl Vink @ Khalid Abdullah, the company’s former chief information officer.

“The board of directors of Cahya Mata has passed a resolution requesting Mahmud Abu Bekir to continue his service with the group and not to take leave of absence as announced on April 22,” Cahya Mata pointed out in a media statement.

“The board wishes to announce that it is completely satisfied that the allegations of conflict of interest made against Mahmud Abu Bekir and Vink are without any basis whatsoever.”

This is in relation to the award of a contract by CMS I-Systems Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of CMS, to Vienna Advantage GmbH.

To re-cap, Mahmud Abu Bekir had on April 22 tendered his request for leave of absence in relation to reports lodged with the relevant authorities following whistle-blower allegations.

“While the board is grateful for his gesture of seeking leave of absence, we have reviewed the situation and resolved that there is no need for him to do so,” noted Cahya Mata.

“Mahmud Abu Bekir has agreed to the board’s request and we have informed the authorities accordingly.”

At today’s close of trading, Cahya Mata was down 33 sen or 16.26% to RM1.70 with 80.48 million shares traded, thus valuing the company at RM1.83 bil. – May 6, 2021
