COVID-19: Malaysia records new high as cases near 7k mark

THE Health Ministry (MOH) has reported 6,976 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, another record high, bringing the cumulative total to 512,091.

In a tweet, Health Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also reported that 3,587 patients have recovered from the infection, with the total discharged now stands at 452,821.

He noted that out of the total new cases recorded, 6,971 cases were local transmissions. Meanwhile, out of the 6,971 locally transmitted cases, 6,324 of them were locals while 647 were foreigners.

Currently, there are 57,020 active cases, in which 681 patients are still in receiving treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU), with 361 of them in need of ventilator support.

Dr Noor Hisham also announced that 49 people have succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities to 2,248.

Selangor continues to record the highest number of cases (2,235), followed by Sarawak (633) and Kelantan (626). – May 21, 2021
