COVID-19: Number of ICU patients and ventilator dependents on the rise

THE Health Ministry today reported that there are 22,512 active COVID-19 cases in the country, in which 260 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) with 125 requiring ventilator support.

In a statement today, the Health Ministry’s director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that there were 2,847 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, a slight decrease from yesterday.

According to Dr Noor Hisham, out of the 2,847 new cases, 2,843 cases were local transmissions while the rest are imported infections. In addition, out of 2,843 locally transmitted cases, 91.5% or 2,601 of them were locals while 242 were foreigners.

Meanwhile, 2,341 people were recorded to have recovered from the infection.

Since the start of the pandemic, Malaysia has now seen 387,535 COVID-19 infections and 363,608 recoveries while recovery rate stood at 93.8%.

He also noted that eight people have succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities to 1,415.

Meanwhile, Selangor records the highest number of cases with 748 infections, followed by Sarawak (717) and Kelantan (476).

On a related matter, Dr Noor Hisham announced that his ministry has detected eight new clusters in the country while six clusters have ended today. – April 23, 2021
