INFECTION cases in Malaysia remain precarious as it recorded 2,500 new cases today, bringing the cumulative total to 417,512.
In a tweet, Health Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also announced that 2,068 patients have been cured, with the total discharged now stands at 385,208.
“Eighteen people have died today, bringing the death tally to 1,551,” he added.
Selangor recorded the highest number of cases again (637), followed by Kelantan (401), Sarawak (356), and Johor (205).
“Of the current active cases, 352 patients are still in receiving treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU), with 186 of them in need of ventilator support,” he remarked.
On related matter, Noor Hisham blamed “pandemic fatigue” for the spike in infections not only in Malaysia but across the globe, as people are getting apathetic towards standard operating procedure (SOP) compliance.
“Plus, the authorities’ move to relax rules on certain economic sectors, reopen borders and allowing mass gatherings has allowed the coronavirus to spread again.
“The problem is being compounded by new mutant variants of COVID-19 appearing all over the world,” Noor Hisham lamented. – May 3, 2021.
