COVID-19: Gov’t, private healthcare overstretched, what now?

GOVERNMENT hospitals around the Klang Valley are running out of beds at intensive care units (ICUs) to treat critical COVID-19 cases, according to Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

“Hospital Sungai Buloh has seen more than 20 case referrals to the ICU daily in the past one week and the hospital is almost running out of beds,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Meanwhile, the number of new infections continue to rise as the Health Ministry (MOH) has reported 3,418 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours.

In a tweet, Health Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also announced that 2,698 patients have been cured, with the total discharged now stands at 383,140.

“Twelve people have died today, bringing the death tally to 1,533,” he added.

Currently, there are 30,339 active COVID-19 cases in the country, in which 345 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) with 175 requiring ventilator support.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases again (1,200), followed by Sarawak (587), Kelantan (400) and Johor (213).

On a related matter, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has dismissed speculation claiming that the Government would reimpose a two-week movement control order (MCO 3.0) in Selangor, KL, Penang, Johor and Sarawak beginning May 3.

He added the speculation was false as the National Security Council (NSC) has yet to meet since Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s remark on the Government’s need to review the current MCO. – May 2, 2021
