Crisis in Melaka: Dissolve state assembly and hold election, Zahid says

UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called for the Melaka state assembly to be dissolved to pave way for snap polls.

“We must return the mandate to the people so that they can choose a new state government.

“Despite Melaka being helmed by my party, I’m prepared to lose the state polls but let’s wait and see what happens,” he said, at the Dewan Rakyat today.

Just now, four Melaka state assemblypersons held a press conference to announce that they had withdrawn support from Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali (UMNO).

“We have already sent a letter to Sulaiman on the matter and are willing to face disciplinary action from the party,” Malaysiakini reported Sungai Udang state assemblyperson Datuk Seri Idris Haron as saying.

Also present alongside Idris were Pantai Kundur assemblyperson Datuk Nor Azman Hassan (UMNO), Pengkalan Batu assemblyperson Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Independent) and Telok Mas assemblyperson Noor Effandi Ahmad (Bersatu).

The eleven elected state representatives from Pakatan Harapan had announced that they would meet state governor Tun Ali Rustam soon to deliberate on the latest development.

It is to note that the Sabah state election last year triggered one of the longest running COVID-19 wave in Malaysia, with death toll breaching the 100-mark.

Prior to that, Malaysia recorded two-digit daily new infections. -Oct 4, 2021.
