PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced an extra public holiday in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations this year.
He explained that the additional day off will depend on when the festival falls. If Hari Raya is observed on Friday, March 20, the following Monday, March 23, will be declared a public holiday.
However, if the celebration begins on Saturday, March 21, the extra holiday will instead be given on Friday, March 20.
Anwar made the announcement while officiating the launch of the National Consumers Day celebration on Sunday (March 15).
According to the prime minister, the move is meant to recognise the commitment and sacrifices shown by Malaysians throughout the year, particularly during the fasting month.
He noted that many people have dedicated additional time, effort and energy during Ramadan, and the government wished to acknowledge this with a small token of appreciation.
The official start of Aidilfitri will be determined after the sighting of the Syawal crescent moon, scheduled for the evening of March 19.—Mar 15, 2026
