KUALA LUMPUR: Federal Court Judge Tan Sri Idrus Harun, 65, has been appointed as the new Attorney-General (AG), effective March 6, replacing Tan Sri Tommy Thomas who stepped down after a 21-month old stint.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to the application of Tan Sri Tommy Thomas to shorten his service as the Attorney General effective Feb 28, said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office today. The government is grateful to Thomas for his service to the country during his tenure as Attorney General.
“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong also approved the appointment of Federal Court judge Tan Sri Idrus Harun as the new Attorney General for a two-year period, effective March 6,” it said.
The Malaysian Bar has welcomed the appointment of Idrus as the new AG and hopes to work with him in all matters related and of mutual interest to both institutions.
Its president Datuk Abdul Fareed Abdul Gafoor said the now former Federal Court judge has wide experience and exposure from his many years in the Attorney General’s Chambers as well as the judiciary.
He recalled that Idrus who was formerly the solicitor general prior to his elevation to the Court of Appeal and then to the Federal Court.
“The Bar believes Tan Sri would be able to carry out his duties efficiently and effectively to uphold the rule of law without fear or favour. The Bar wishes to work alongside with Tan Sri in all matters related and of mutual interest to both institutions,” Abdul Fareed said in a statement. – March 6, 2020
