Foreign investors sold their stock holdings every day of last week

FOREIGN investors have turned net sellers again for the week ended June 25 after a brief spell as net buyers in the week prior, culminating in an outflow amounting to -RM469.52 mil.

As the market reopened last Monday (June 21), foreign investors sold -RM184.99 mil net of local equities with retailers and local institutions both being net buyers to the tune of RM121.41 mil and RM63.58 mil respectively.

“Foreign investors were net seller every day last week,” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report. “The largest foreign outflow was recorded on Monday (June 21) with the smallest outflow on Friday (June 25) to the tune of -RM710,000.”

On the other hand, retailers were net buyers every day of the week. Their largest net buying was recorded on Thursday (June 24) at +RM147.28 mil while their smallest net buying took place on Tuesday (June 22) to the tune of RM81.25 mil.

Cumulatively, retailers net bought +RM579.89 mil worth of equities in Bursa Malaysia during the week while local institutions recorded a cumulative weekly outflow of -RM110.37 mil with net selling occurring from Wednesday (June 23) to Friday (June 25).

The biggest net selling done by local institutions was on Friday (June 25) at -RM121.21 mil. Conversely, their largest net buying was on Monday (June 21) to the tune of +RM63.58 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers are cumulatively the only net buyers of in the Malaysian equity market to the tune of RM7.90 bil while local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of -RM4.08 bil and -RM3.81 bil respectively.

In terms of participation, retail investors posted a weekly movement of -12.81% while local institutions and foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of -21.61% and +37.81% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, Indonesia was the only market which posted a net inflow with +US$92.21 mil while Thailand raked in the most outflow at -US$142.84 mil followed by Malaysia (-US$113..03 mil) and the Philippines (-US$50.24 mil).

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Tenaga Nasional Bhd (RM3.04 mil), DiGi.Com Bhd (RM2.81 mil) and Inari Amerton Bhd (RM2.72 mil). – June 28, 2021
