Forget swab test; saliva-based COVID-19 test kit is on the way to Malaysia

THE current COVID-19 pandemic has surely stretched the product creativity aspect of many Malaysian listed companies to the maximum.

Reminiscent of the once popular Ripley’s Believe It or Not! television series, there is not only an array of impromptu diversification from the core business into the healthcare sphere comprising gloves, vaccine distribution and personal protection equipment (PPE) but also the ‘outstanding’ aspect of the product, to say the least.

A striking product is perhaps that of MY E.G. Services Bhd’s (MyEG) at-home, saliva-based COVID-19 testing service.

As the exclusive distributor of the testing kit, the e-government services provider expects the new approach to not only make COVID-19 testing much more accessible, but to ensure better protection for people and frontline healthcare providers.

This is given the test kit reduces the need for close contact as samples can be collected in the comfort and safety of home or within the confines of the workplace.

“This fast, convenient and non-invasive method of testing can greatly enhance early accurate detection and subsequent early intervention, which would in turn be instrumental in containing the spread and impact of the COVID-19 virus,” justified MyEG.

At the moment, the diagnostic kit will be made available in the Philippines but MyEG plans to deploy a similar approach to testing in Malaysia pending approval from the relevant regulators for the use of the test kits.

In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, MYEG has leveraged its strengths as a leading digital services provider in the region to embark on a number of significant initiatives in the fight against the pandemic.

These initiatives include, among others, a cooperation with Anhui Zhifei Longcom Biopharmaceutical Co Ltd to conduct Phase 3 trials, obtain Halal certification and distribute Chinese company’s vaccine in Malaysia; the provision of MySafeTravel, a digital health pass system to facilitate inbound travellers’ adherence to mandatory COVID-19 testing and quarantine requirements as well as the provision of a one-stop portal for the screening of workers in the country.

At 4pm, MYEG was up 11 sen or 5.95% at RM1.96 with 22.87 million shares traded, thus valuing the company at RM7.39 bil. – Feb 4, 2021
