GENTARI Sdn Bhd (Gentari), a clean energy solutions outfit wholly owned by PETRONAS, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the Malaysian arm of global electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD, to support the development and deployment of high-power EV charging infrastructure in Malaysia.
The strategic collaboration will explore opportunities to deploy the BYD Flash Charging technology in Malaysia alongside battery energy storage systems (BESS) with the aim of making charging faster and more convenient for EV users.
BYD Flash Charging can deliver approximately 400km of driving range in as little as five minutes for compatible vehicles under optimal conditions.
The partnership comes as Malaysia’s EV market continues to expand rapidly with 53,537 new EV registrations recorded in the first nine months of 2026, a 98.8% jump from the same period last year.
This growth reflects the continued momentum of EV adoption in the country, thus supporting Malaysia’s broader ambition to accelerate vehicle electrification, including the government’s target of 30,000 public EV charging points nationwide by 2030.

Beyond China’s border
To support this growth, Gentari currently operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia and provides access to about 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India through its Gentari Go Roaming Hub.
“Malaysia’s EV market is growing but the next phase of adoption will depend on the quality, convenience and reliability of the charging experience,” enthused Gentari’s group CEO Sushil Purohit following the recent MOU inking in Shenzhen, China.
“Speed is one part of that equation. Drivers also need chargers in the right places, backed by reliable power and dependable operations.”
Added Sushil: “BYD’s leadership in EV, battery and high-power charging technology combined with Gentari’s experience in developing and operating EV charging networks gives us a strong foundation to strengthen Malaysia’s EV charging ecosystem and support wider adoption.”
Under the MOU, the parties will work together to identify suitable charging locations for BYD Flash Charging infrastructure, including key intercity corridors connecting major population centres.
They will also assess supporting power infrastructure, battery energy storage requirements, technical and commercial considerations, project development opportunities and potential operating models to enable future deployment at scale.

In addition to green mobility, the parties will also explore opportunities in renewable energy generation and energy storage, drawing on Gentari’s clean energy expertise and BYD’s capabilities in energy storage and technology innovation.
“BYD has been investing in advanced charging technology to address one of the key considerations for EV users which is charging time,” revealed BYD’s vice president and BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division’s general manager Liu Xueliang.
“We’re now taking this technology beyond our home market and expanding its reach to more international markets.” – Oct 22, 2026
