HLA becomes third Malaysian insurer to provide COVID-19 coverage

HONG Leong Assurance (HLA) has joined Prudential Malaysia and AIA Malaysia to empower Malaysians with sufficient medical coverage to seek COVID-19 treatment at private hospitals.

The coverage is given at no extra cost as part of HLA’s complimentary special benefit for policyholders with individual medical plans when they get admitted at private hospitals for COVID-19 treatments in Categories 3 (symptomatic, pneumonia), Category 4 (symptomatic, pneumonia, requiring supplemental oxygen) and Category 5 (critically-ill with multi-organ involvement).

Policyholders are entitled to claim hospitalisation reimbursement up to their annual limit and lifetime limit subject to the existing terms and condition of their medical plan.

“This programme also offers policyholders coverage for post-vaccination complication with daily hospitalisation benefit of RM200/day up to seven days for any complications that may arise after they are vaccinated,” noted HLA.

AIA Malaysia was the first insurer to offer COVID-19 coverage by offering Malaysians and their families COVID-19 vaccine complications cover and COVID-19 diagnosis cover at no additional cost with effect from June 8.

The free COVID-19 vaccine complications cover comes with a hospital income of RM100/day (up to 14 days) if a person is admitted to the hospital due to COVID-19 vaccine complications and a RM20,000 benefit if the person passes away in Malaysia as a result of the vaccine side effects or complications (valid until Dec 31 or when total claims limit reaches RM3 mil whichever comes first).

Meanwhile, the special COVID-19 diagnosis cover provides a RM1,000 cash relief to support customers who are diagnosed with COVID-19 and are unable to continue working due to quarantine requirements, including home quarantine.

Additionally, it also covers death due to COVID-19 whereby a lump sum of RM5,000 (for new customer) and RM10,000 (for AIA’s existing customer) will be paid.

Customers who are eligible will get to enjoy the free cover until Sept 30 or when the total claims limit reaches RM1.5 mil whichever comes first.

As for Prudential Malaysia, the company’s COVID-19 medical plan coverage campaign runs from Aug 6 until an announcement on the end of coverage.

“This coverage (for Categories 3, 4 and 5) allows reimbursement based on existing terms and conditions stated in your Prudential Malaysia insurance contract/takaful certificate whereby medical claims limits will be reduced according to the paid amount,” the company pointed out.

“The reimbursement will be provided based on the terms and conditions stated in the Prudential Malaysia’s insurance contract/ takaful certificate whereby the eligible medical plan will be treated as if it does not have a pandemic exclusion clause (which states that the medical plan does not cover communicable disease requiring quarantine by law).” – Aug 18, 2021
