Loke: Road tax rates for electric vehicles cheaper than fuel cars

TRANSPORT Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the Transport Ministry is finalising road tax rates for electric vehicles (EVs), aiming to make them cheaper than internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.

Loke stated that the challenge lies in comparing EV capacities with ICE cars. The government is committed to lowering EV taxes at reasonable rates. Loke expects the EV road tax details to be announced by April’s end.

He witnessed an MOU (memorandum of understanding) signing between Warisan Tan Chong Automotif and Guangzhou Automotive Group Motor International, enhancing Malaysia’s attractiveness for global investors in the automotive industry.

“The challenge faced in the current detailing process is the comparison of the capacity (CC) of ICE cars with EVs. Now, (EV users) don’t have to pay tax but EV buyers are worried that the tax that will be charged is much higher compared to ICE cars.

“The current government’s commitment is to lower the tax so that EV buyers can get a reasonable EV road tax rate, so it is hoped that the EV road tax details can be announced before the end of April so that the road tax (EV) rate paid is still reasonable,” he said when met in Kuala Mud on Saturday (March 30).

Moreover, he expects the road tax rate for that type of vehicle to be announced next month. – March 31, 2024
