MCA: RM500m allocation to fix flood-damaged infrastructure welcomed but long-term solutions still needed

A SELANGOR MCA leader has applauded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement regarding the immediate allocation of RM500 mil to repair public infrastructure damaged by recent floods in several states.

Party vice president Datuk Ir Lawrence Low said this measure demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety, welfare, and convenience of people remain a priority, particularly for those directly affected by the disaster.

“We hope that the distribution of this aid will be carried out transparently, efficiently, and in an orderly manner, prioritising areas that sustained severe damage, thereby helping to alleviate the burden on citizens still confronted with difficulties as waters recede,” he stated.

“In line with the implementation of the Madani Budget 2026, which focuses on public welfare and infrastructure development, Selangor MCA is confident this step represents an important beginning towards a more effective and sustainable disaster management system.”

Low further expressed support for the government’s efforts to strengthen flood mitigation plans and enhance disaster preparedness, adding that floods necessitate bot only post-disaster recovery action but long-term strategies to prevent future occurrences, reduce risks and minimise damage.

“Selangor MCA, together with the Crisis Relief Squad of MCA (CRSM), will continue to undertake our role in assisting those in need, including flood victims during disasters and in post-floods clean-up operations,” he stressed.

In the Prime Minister’s announcement on Tuesday (Dec 2), he also instructed all departments under the state and federal governments to conduct damage assessments and implement repair work immediately.

“This includes schools, clinics, basic facilities and roads. To expedite, I have approved RM500 million for the purpose of repairing flood damage,” he was quoted as saying when tabling the Supply (Budget) Bill 2026 for its second reading in the Dewan Negara today.

The Supply Bill was passed on Dec 1 in the Dewan Rakyat after being tabled by him on Oct 10.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) had increased its preparedness and implemented appropriate actions together with local authorities and state governments in dealing with the disaster.

This year’s floods have seen more than 150 additional temporary relief centres (PPS) activated recently, assisting more than 12,000 flood victims. ‒ Dec 4, 2025
