MCA to support Perikatan…until the next national polls

DESPITE long-time ally pulling support from the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Government, MCA reiterated that it would continue supporting the coalition until the next general election.

“This is in line with the Barisan Nasional (BN) resolution last year and the party is duty-bound to uphold it.

“And we will remain with BN as well, a per this year annual general assembly resolution,” its political bureau said, in a statement.

Two days ago, Umno announced that it was withdrawing support from Perikatan and urged Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin to resign.

In return, Mahiaddin said in a live telecast yesterday that he would only seek a confidence vote next month, when the Parliament reconvenes.

As the political crisis deepens, Malaysia recorded the highest COVID-19 infections yesterday, at 19,819 cases and a whopping 257 deaths.

Apart from Umno and MCA, MIC and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) are also BN members to date. MCA currently holds the Ayer Hitam and Tanjung Piai MP seats.

On that note, MCA lauded Mahiaddin’s decision to seek for a confidence vote at the Parliament next month, which also received consent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“The decision is the right one, founded upon the principles of parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy.

“And the facts and reality are evident that not one party or coalition can form a stable government if the Perikatan Government falls right now.

“It will only drag the country into yet another deep-end of a political crisis, to the detriment of the people and country,” MCA added.

Reopen economic sectors

On related matter, MCA urged the Government to reopen economic sectors in stages, given the successful rollout of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK).

It noted that the current movement control order (MCO) has not been effective in reducing the number of COVID-19 cases, adding prolonging the lockdown would only affect the people’s livelihood further.

“A comprehensive approach to vaccinating the population still remains the best way for our country, at the moment,” it remarked. – Aug 5, 2021.
