MIA’s CEO to bid farewell to institute come end-January

MALAYSIAN Institute of Accountants’ (MIA) CEO Dr Nurmazilah Mahzan will be leaving the umbrella body for the accountancy profession in Malaysia at the end of this month after having served the institute since 2016.

According to MIA president Dr Veerinderjeet Singh, Nurmazilah who was supposed to leave MIA by end-December 2021 has kindly extended her tenure by another month in order to support the institute’s work.

“Meanwhile, the nominating committee is in the process of shortlisting and interviewing suitable candidates for the position of the CEO,” he said in the President’s 2022 New Year Message.

Veerinderjeet’s message clears the air following the claim by a member who wrote to FocusM that “MIA does not seem to give regard to the principles of transparency and accountability in dealing with matters involving members and public interest”.

“It seems that the CEO will not be leaving MIA by end-2021. What is going on at this important accounting regulator?” asked the member who identified himself as Wong.

On Oct 18, Verinderjeet had written to all members to inform them that Nurmazilah will be leaving the institute effective Dec 31 “to pursue other interests and begin a new chapter in her career”.

“To ensure a smooth transition, Nurmazilah has agreed to assist in the process of finding a successor and as such will stay on in an acting capacity for a period of time that will be mutually determined,” he noted.

During her tenure as MIA’s head honcho, Nurmazilah has led the institute’s value creation, regulatory and nation building agenda, according to the MIA’s senior management team profile on its website.

In year New Year message dated Dec 30, Nurmazilah made no mention whatsoever about her eventual departure.

Instead she has predicted three core emerging trends in 2022, namely (i) hybrid revolution; (ii) accelerating digitalisation; and (iii) ESG (environmental, social and governance) adoption.

“Apart from the hybrid working model driven by the impact of COVID 19, other activities such as engagement and training will also move into this mode,” she wrote. “Therefore, risk management, processes and procedures need to be adapted to ensure targets and outcomes can be achieved.” – Jan 4, 2022
