Muhyiddin: The government has a problem with ‘trust deficit’

PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin claimed that the government is now facing a problem of ‘trust deficit’ that is becoming a chronic issue with the public losing trust in the regime, which is trying to control the narrative on social media. He added that the government seems incapable of accepting criticism from the public, as such criticism seems to weaken the image of the government and make it unpopular.“Why should it (social media) be blocked? Weren’t they the most vocal advocates for media freedom? It is said that they are advocates for democracy and human rights.“Why is it that when they become the government, they greedily use power to restrict freedom? Turns out they are all hypocrites,” he said while speaking at the PN Representative Convention Council today.Muhyiddin argued that he never restricted the right of the people to speak on social media during his tenure as prime minister.“They threw various accusations against me and the PN government, but never once did I instruct the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) or TikTok to block videos or people’s posts on social media.“That is our principle in governing the country. Our country has laws and the power of the government is limited by laws.” – March 9, 2024
