THE resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as Chairman of PN is alleged to be not yet valid, as the PN Supreme Council, which is expected to meet this week, has yet to make any decision to accept it.
PN Election Director-General Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Mohd Nor said that under the PN Constitution, any decision regarding the resignation of the coalition’s chairman must be made at a PN Supreme Council meeting.
He said the Supreme Council meeting could decide to reject Muhyiddin’s resignation, allowing him to remain in the post.
“It is not certain, because even though he announced it and submitted a letter, under the PN Constitution a resignation must be decided in a meeting,” he said.
“So officially, the resignation is not yet valid. Therefore, there is no need to talk about who wants to become chairman, because his resignation has not been validated yet. He must resign in a meeting and it must be accepted in that meeting for it to be valid,” Sanusi added.
According to him, Muhyiddin remains as PN chairman if the meeting suddenly decides otherwise even though he has announced his resignation to the whole world.
Asked about the possibility of the PN Supreme Council rejecting Muhyiddin’s resignation, Sanusi explained that if this were to happen, it could cause the former Prime Minister to be seen as inconsistent.
“However, if (Muhyiddin) stays on, it would have the effect of making him look ‘flip-flop’. He has already made up his mind, so it would be unlikely for the meeting not to accept it. The PN meeting will be held within a week,” he said.
Previously, Muhyiddin, who is also a former Prime Minister, announced his resignation as PN Chairman after five years leading the coalition, effective from 1 January.
Following the announcement, various speculations emerged over who would lead the coalition, with names mentioned including PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
Meanwhile, commenting on UMNO’s decision to remain with the Unity Government, Sanusi alleged that the party carries certain “burdens” among its leadership, making it difficult for them to take any decisive action. —Jan 7, 2025
