Nestlé Malaysia to get 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by Jan 2022

NESTLÉ Malaysia stated that as of Jan 1 2022, all of its operations in Malaysia would be powered entirely by renewable electricity.

This will help the firm to minimise CO2 emissions by 75,000 tonnes each year.

The company is leapfrogging and meeting its prior pledge to source 100% of its electricity from Renewable Energy sources by 2025.

The Green Electricity Tariff (GET) initiative, established by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA) in collaboration with TNBX Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Bhd has made this move feasible at the end of Nov 2021.

“Nestlé Malaysia was one of the nine companies that pledged the adoption of this programme and is among the first to have completed the approval process,” said Nestlé chief executive officer Juan Arnolds.

“With this, all operational sites of the Company in Malaysia will utilise Renewable Electricity.

“As we strive to shape a greener future for all, we continuously work to minimise our environmental impact.

“By adopting the Green Tariff programme recently launched by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, we can now supply all our electricity needs from solar and hydroelectric power supplied by TNBX.”

According to Arnolds, this change will allow access to Malaysia Renewable Energy Certificates (mRECs), thus contributing to the company’s commitment to half their greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050.

“We are also contributing to Malaysia’s national vision to accelerate the development of Renewable Energy,” he added.

Meanwhile, TNBX Sdn Bhd managing director Ir. Nirinder Singh Johl expressed his pleasure at having a global company such as Nestlé Malaysia supporting the GET programme, which provides access to clean energy to incentivise Malaysians to go green and reduce their carbon footprint for electricity consumption.

“This will certainly contribute to the nation’s sustainable development agenda, and we hope that other companies will similarly follow suit,” he remarked.

This initiative is one of many that Nestlé Malaysia is working to implement as part of the company’s journey to net zero emissions.

It complements the company’s efforts to increase environmental efficiency across its operations, which include ongoing efforts to reduce water consumption and CO2 emissions per tonne of products sold.

It also works in tandem with reforestation initiatives such as Project RELeaf and efforts to implement Regenerative Agriculture all through the company’s supply chain. – Dec 9, 2021
