Netizens express dismay over group seeking royal pardon for Najib

NETIZENS have turned to social media to express their anger over recent news of a group that has petitioned the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to pardon former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for his past conviction and ongoing trials.

The group, Pertubuhan Sahabat Ulul Amri Malaysia (PSUAM) said that the pardon will pave way for Najib to become prime minister again on an interim basis.

“If the petition is accepted, it will open up floodgates. But that’s not all – it would undermine the process of criminal justice in Malaysia,” opined user @lawabidingciti1.

User @un_zmi contended, “Although I love his sense of humour, Najib is a convicted criminal. We did not bring him down to see him become interim PM again.”

“Surely the rakyat wants Muhyiddin to step down but not to be replaced by Najib,” another dismayed user said.

“The Malaysian people deserve better,” insisted user @Momopopohehe, adding that if the group thinks that Najib is the answer, the expectations have been set so low.

Meanwhile, user @vijaym0han opined that it is only when the likes of Najib and Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi get sent to prison for their misconduct, abuse of power and corruption that there will be a precedence for future leaders.

“[The future leaders need] to know that they cannot, at any cost, cheat the people of Malaysia and undermine the constitution,” he pointed out.

According to PSUAM chairperson Syed Muhammad Syed Abdul Aziz, Najib has not been proven guilty until he has exhausted all his legal options and a pardon would indicate His Majesty’s blessing.

“This is an opportunity to save Malaysia. Najib fulfils two criteria – he is trusted by His Majesty and he has experience running the country,” said Imran.

He added that Najib’s leadership had been proven during his former administration of the country.

“In my opinion, Najib did a good job throughout his tenure as the sixth prime minister. He managed the economy well and brought the good name of Malaysia to the international stage.” – Aug 13, 2021.
