“No criminal element”: Facebook post by CJ’s husband a personal opinion, says cops

THE police are not investigating the husband of Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat over a 2018 Facebook post that was deemed critical of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

In a statement yesterday (Aug 23) Cheras district police chief Zam Halim Jamaluddin said that the post by Zamani Ibrahim was a personal political opinion and had “no criminal element”.

According to Zam, a police report was lodged about the Facebook post on Aug 18, adding that Zamani’s post became viral after it was circulated by irresponsible parties.

Zam further advised the public against sharing old videos, statements or pictures to avoid confusion.

Earlier yesterday, Najib filed an application to recuse Tengku Maimun from hearing the appeal on grounds that Zamani had “negative sentiments” towards his leadership while he was prime minister.

In Najib’s application the Pekan MP said he was making the application not to disrespect the court and the ongoing proceedings but in the interest of protecting the independence of the judiciary.

In the Facebook post, Zamani shared his observations of the 14th general election and the fall of the Barisan Nasional government, adding that he was “happy because Najib had been dethroned”.

However, Tengku Maimun ruled that there was “no nexus” between her husband’s Facebook post and Najib’s appeal, noting that the post was put up long before Najib was ever charged in High Court over the SRC International case.

A five-person apex court bench chaired by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat yesterday (Aug 23) unanimously dismissed the former prime minister’s appeal to quash his conviction over seven criminal charges as well as the sentencing.

Najib was sentenced to prison and a fine of RM210 mil after he was convicted on seven charges brought against him for abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust over SRC International funds amounting to RM42 mil. – Aug 24, 2022
