“SUE Akmal till bankruptcy like Jamal. Good work, YB Teresa Kok”.
Such was one hell of moral support extended to DAP lawmaker Teresa Kok, one that reminisces her squeezing RM366.000 (RM300,000 in damages and RM66,000 in unsettled costs) out of UMNO Sungai Besar division chief Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos for defaming her of abusing state welfare funds.
This came about after the six-term Seputeh MP revealed in a Facebook post commencement of proceedings of her RM25 mil defamation suit filed against firebrand UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh at the Melaka High Court on Thursday (July 30).
The case management took place before judicial commissioner Isa Aziz Ibrahim with Kok represented by Datuk Sankara Nair and his legal team.
In her second post uploaded five hours later, the former National DAP vice-chairman shared that the defendant showed up with his wife and around 25 supporters to hear the case of his video clip attacking her with the derogatory “Nyonya Tua” label over her objection to the halal certification mandate in September 2024.
“In his testimony, he stated that his video criticism was made based on a news report published by the Bahasa Malaysia version of the Malaysiakini portal,” penned the 62-year-old career politician.
He also explained that the word “nyonya” is a title for Chinese women in Melaka besides reasoning out Islamic law on the term ‘wanita haram’. The statement he gave in court was brief.
Today’s (July 31) session was also attended by Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong, Bandar Hilir state assemblywoman Leng Chau Yen as well as several Melaka DAP members who were present to offer me support.
Hopefully justice will be served for me through the court’s decision.
‘Difficult to frame defence’
First thing first. Although fanbase of the self-proclaimed defender of race and religion did invade Kok’s comment section to rally his innocence as “a victory for Islam” or “what is halal is halal and what is haram is still haram”, they were quickly countered and subdued by Madani backers.
One presumably DAP loyalist declared “we’re awaiting good news to pop open our chill champagne 😁😁😜” much to the annoyance of the rightist fraternity.
“Don’t settle this with just a public apology or a retraction of his statements,” reminded a business services & support sole proprietor.
“Pursue the lawsuit and seek substantial damages. Don’t give him the option to settle easily – he needs to be held accountable for his actions. Wishing you all the best and every success in winning the case.”
This was further reinforced by another pro-Madani netizen. “OK if Akmal loses don’t accept apologies only 🤑 money [sic]” – again to the irritation of the UMNO bsckers.
Another pledged “to run 500 meters to celebrate and I’ll also invite those DAP supporters to join in if Teresa Kok wins this case” while one commenter hopes the Merlimau state assemblyman “will end up like ikan bakar (grilled fish) and lelong (auction) his socks🧦”.
On seemingly learned netizen “don’t see any creditable basis to frame the defence as valid”. “He seemed rich and should be sued till he has no undies left with reference to him wearing it in court [sic]”.
Amid UMNO cybertroopers swamping Kok’s comment section to run her and DAP down, it is praiseworthy to see some Muslims rowing against the tide by praying for the victory of Kuala Lumpur-born Kok who started her political career as the political secretary to former DAP supremo Tan Sri Kim Kit Siang. – Aug 1, 2026
