One-off teachers’ intake: Explain the discrepancies, Teo tells Radzi

KULAI MP Teo Nie Ching urged the Education Ministry (MOE) to explain the selection process for its one-off intake programme to fill up over 18,000 teaching vacancies in the country.  

“While it’s a good initiative, the MOE and Education Service Commission of Malaysia (ESC) cannot ignore the criticism levelled on the intake procedure, which is getting louder,” she said, in a statement.  

Last year, Senior Minister (Education) Datuk Mohd Radzi Jidin announced a one-off intake to fill up 18,702 teaching vacancies (DG41) across Malaysia.  

“Education field graduates will be given priority whether they are from the public, private or foreign institutes. 

“The appointment will be extended to non-educational field graduates through a variety of appointment methods in the next phase if there are still vacancies that cannot be filled by education field graduates,” New Straits Times reported the minister as saying back then.  

Touching on the matter, Teo alleged that, among others, applicant with early childhood degrees from local universities did not get interview calls despite applying.  

Left out despite highly qualified  

She added that over 1,000 optional applications from those holding early childhood education diploma were also left out, with only 12 being selected.  

“In fact, there were many with ikthisas qualifications who were also left in the lurch despite receiving support from their heads of department.  

“To be specific, a teacher named Jannah holds a degree and diploma in education, in addition to having 12 years of teaching experience yet she was not called for an interview. What is happening?” the former deputy education minister queried.  

Teo then urged Radzi to explain the matter to the public, in line with his ministry’s hashtag which says #KPMPrihatin (MOE Cares). 

“These people have called on MOE and ESC for meetings but were ignored. I urge both to address the matter as soon as possible,” she concluded. – Jan 16, 2022.
