PAS: Umno breached Muafakat Nasional, recovery plan at stake!

AS crisis deepens within the Perikatan Nasional Government, PAS accused its ally Umno of breaching the Muafakat Nasional charter, signed by both parties in 2019.

“We are upset over Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahdi Hamidi’s instruction, asking all of its party MPs to withdraw support from Perikatan.

“This is clearly not in line with the Muslim solidarity concept championed by the charter. It will also indirectly impact the National Recovery Plan (NRP) and the Government’s efforts to help the people deal with this devastating pandemic,” said PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man in a statement.

Following Pakatan Harapan’s win in the 2018 General Election, Umno formed an alliance with its long-time rival PAS, in the name of Muslims solidarity to champion issues facing the ummah.

Despite being touted one of the biggest political alliances to date, the pact suffered issues after both parties joined the Perikatan coalition, headed by Umno’s splinter party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi).

Two days ago, Umno announced that it was withdrawing support from Perikatan and urged Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin to resign.

Mahiaddin retaliated by saying in a live telecast yesterday that he would only seek a confidence vote next month, when the Parliament reconvenes.

On that note, Tuan Ibrahim expressed the need for signatory parties to defend the Muafakat Nasional charter for the sake of Muslim solidarity.

“This is important as there is a need for us to solidify Malay-Muslim political strength for the sake of political stability and national harmony,” the Environment and Water Minister remarked. – Aug 5, 2021
