‘Peru-sing’ agricultural exporting opportunities to Asian markets

PERU’s public and private sector are working together in efforts to explore possibilities of exporting Peruvian products to the Asian markets. This presents a huge opportunity for Malaysia to jump in on the train and prepare itself to accommodate exports from Peru.

According to Peru’s National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT), the Peruvian agriculture exports to Asia amounted to US$507 mil within the first ten months of this year, which was a 3.1% increase from the same period in 2019.

Exports of fresh fruit and vegetables to Asia reached US$320 mil, accounting for 10% of Peru’s total fruit and vegetable exports worldwide.

The main products exported to Asia were fresh grapes (US$109 mil); fresh cranberries (US$90 mil); avocados (US$69 mil) and fresh mandarins (US$18 mil).

The South American country has become an international benchmark in the production of agri-food products in recent decades and is the world’s biggest exporter of cranberries, asparagus and quinoa, the second biggest exporter of mandarins, the third of avocados, and the fifth of table grapes.

“Asian consumers are among the world’s most discerning and well-informed when it comes to buying fruit and vegetables,” said Peru’s Agricola Chapi general manager Augusto Baertl.

Baertl also remarked on the opportunities for the further development of Peruvian products in China, thanks to the rapid growth and volume of sales and singled out the Japanese and South Korean markets due to their insistence on quality and the prices they are willing to pay to get that quality.

With its sights already set on 2021, Peru is finalising the promotional campaigns of the Superfoods Peru brand, highlighting its leading fruit and vegetables and the world-renowned Andean grains, among other products.

These campaigns will be rolled out in various countries at points of sale, retail outlets and the HoReCa channel, thus continuing the strategy to position Peruvian products not only among trade professionals but also end consumers. – Dec 19, 2020
