PETRONAS, CelcomDigi collab to harness 5G for energy industry transformation

PETROLIAM Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) and CelcomDigi Bhd have embarked on a strategic collaboration to leverage 5G technology in a bid to propel digital transformation and sustainability initiatives within the energy sector.

The joint effort aims to explore innovative applications of 5G in enhancing PETRONAS’ operations and facilitating the integration of clean energy solutions into CelcomDigi’s enterprise offerings.

In a joint statement, the parties expressed their commitment to harnessing the potential of 5G to drive continuous improvement across PETRONAS’ operations.

This collaboration signifies a significant step towards modernising oil and gas operations through the adoption of advanced digital technologies.

“This partnership offers us a great opportunity to expand the power of 5G for our enterprise and the wider community.

“We envision building a robust network infrastructure that’s able to cater to the growing demand for reliable access to high-speed internet within the oil and gas sector,” said PETRONAS vice-president group technology and commercialisation Aadrin Azly.

Meanwhile, CelcomDigi deputy CEO Albern Murty added that the memorandum of understanding represents an opportunity to accelerate the modernisation of oil and gas operations powered by 5G connectivity.

“In the last five years, we have worked closely with PETRONAS to implement private 4G LTE networks on offshore platforms and test digital use cases.

“Together, we have realised practical digital applications for rig operations; for example, what used to be an edge test case of ‘connected rig workers’ is now a must-have to keep rig workers productive and safe.” – April 26, 2024
