Petronas makes third hydrocarbon discovery in offshore Suriname

PETRONAS subsidiary Petronas Suriname E&P B.V has announced its third hydrocarbon discovery at the Fusaea-1 exploration well in Suriname’s Block 52, approximately 170km offshore and 9.0km east from Roystonea-1.

The exploration well, which commenced drilling in February, reached a total depth of 5,227 meters without any lost time injury (LTI), encountering multiple oil and gas-bearing Campanian sandstone reservoir packages.

“Further evaluation is being undertaken to determine the full extent of this discovery and its potential for an integrated development with the recent Roystonea-1 and Sloanea-1 discoveries,” Petronas said in a statement today.

Petronas executive vice president and Upstream CEO Datuk Adif Zulfikfli noted that the results from the Fusaea-1 exploration well reinforce the national oil company’s position in Suriname for significant hydrocarbon resources, following the successes of the Sloanea-1 and Roystonea-1 discoveries.

Meanwhile, Petronas exploration vice president Mohd Redhani Abdul Rahman attributed the success of Fusaea-1 to the company’s enhanced geological understanding of the region, bolstered by recent breakthroughs in Roystonea-1 and Sloanea-1.

“These discoveries have significantly expanded the prospectivity, and integrated oil and gas development potential within Block 52,” stated Redhani.

Covering an area of 4,749 sqkm, Block 52 is situated north of the coast of Paramaribo, Suriname’s capital city, within the promising Suriname-Guyana basin.

Furthermore, Petronas Suriname E&P serves as the operator of Block 52 with a 50% participating interest, in collaboration with ExxonMobil.

In addition to Block 52, Petronas Suriname E&P operates Block 48 and Block 63 with 100% participating interest and holds a 30% non-operating interest in Block 64. – May 16, 2024
