“Please resolve contract doctors’ plight, Mr Health Minister!”

GERAKAN Hartal Doktor Kontrak (HDK) would like to congratulate Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob for being elected as the 9th Prime Minister of Malaysia.

His appointment as the new prime minister hopefully will bring an end to Malaysia’s political turmoil that has grappled the country for the past few months. We do hope that all parties will now play their role in ensuring the country recovers from COVID-19.

We would also take this opportunity to congratulate Khairy Jamaluddin for being appointed as the new Health Minister, replacing Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba. Khairy had indeed proved himself as a proficient leader as showcased in his previous post as Science, Technology and Innovation Minister and had been the minister in charge of the successful National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK). We have utmost confidence in his ability to spearhead our Health Ministry (MOH) and resolve issues involving Malaysia’s healthcare system.

HDK believes that with a new prime minister at helm and Khairy managing MOH, many unresolved issues faced by the healthcare workers especially issues faced by the contract doctors will be settled in the near future.

Many contract doctors who had been the frontliners for the past two years in this battle against COVID-19 are very much uncertain of their fate and future, and hopefully there will be light at the end of the tunnel for us.

Our future looks bleak

It had been a month since the nationwide Hartal Doktor Kontrak was launched, where more than 8,000 contract doctors participated in a massive walkout as a sign of frustration with the lack of proper planning and solution by policy makers regarding the former’s future.

Despite this issue being raised by many MPs in the recently concluded parliamentary sitting, with even Adham Baba promising to resolve this issue, there had been no proper planning proposed by policy makers. This has left the fate of contract doctors uncertain.

HDK hopes that an amicable solution will be made soon for the sake of contract doctors and the nation’s healthcare system in general. We also do hope that any discussion regarding the contract doctors’ future will also involve the main stakeholder; contract doctors.

We would also like to express our sincerest gratitude to all the frontliners who had sacrificed so much in this battle against the pandemic and we wish that all Malaysians will adhere to standard operating procedure (SOP).

Soon, we will emerge victorious in this battle. – Aug 31, 2021.
