ACE Market-listed electrical solutions innovator Powerwell Holdings Bhd has recently hosted the Bald & Beautiful 5.0 charity event organised by public philanthropy platform My Starfish Foundation dedicated to raise both awareness and funds for cancer research.
Made possible with support from Pine Cut Hair Studio, the event staged at Powerwell International Sdn Bhd in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam on Oct 4 attracted over 160 participants and guests with 119 individuals (100 men and 19 women) taking action to support cancer patients.
A total of RM201,000 was raised with the fundraising campaign to continue until end-October to provide on-going support for cancer patients and their families.
Soon after Powerwell’s managing director Jason Tham delivered his welcome speech by thanking guests and supporters for their generous and selfless contributions, My Starfish Foundation chairman Cheng Ping Keat urged participants to shave their heads to raise funds so as to accelerate cancer research, thus supporting both cancer patients and their families.
This was when the Pine Cut Hair Studio led by its owner Patrick Ong and his staff came in to fully support the event while Cancer Research Malaysia senior associate Dr Sindhu delivered an insightful lecture on early cancer prevention.
Elsewhere, cancer survivor Selma Enolil and cancer patient Tan Wai Long also shared their experiences in battling cancer, deeply touching every participant present.
During the shaving ceremony, 105 participants bravely shaved their heads to show support for cancer patients.
One of the highlights of the day was 20-year-old Lau Jer Chyi who not only participated in shaving but also donated her long hair.
“First, I want to show my care and support for cancer patients through this act. Hair loss from chemotherapy is not just a physical change; it’s a psychological challenge as well,” she shared her reasons for participating.
“I hope to convey courage and strength to them. Secondly, as a member of the new generation, I want to break the societal constraints on beauty standards; being bald can also showcase a woman’s confidence. Most importantly, it’s about being true to oneself.”
All in all, the Bald & Beautiful 5.0 event structed a total of 16 hair donors. It concluded with a group photo and a lunch session. – Oct 10, 2024
