“Reformasi princess” Nurul Izzah marries Chinese ex-colleague

PKR’s NURUL Izzah Anwar – often hailed as Malaysia’s first woman prime minister-to-be – has re-married, tying the knot with her former colleague Yin Shao Loong yesterday evening (Aug 5) in a small private ceremony.

The solemnisation ceremony of PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s eldest daughter was carried out at their family home in Bandar Sungai Long, Kajang, in the presence of immediate family members.

“We request everyone’s prayers so that we are always under the protection of Allah SWT,” the newly-minted couple said in a Facebook post announcing their marriage.

Congratulatory messages for the couple poured in on social media, with most wishing the couple a long and blessed married life.

Yin is a Khazanah Research Institute senior research associate, working on industrial policy, climate change and future technologies.

He has also served as executive director of PKR-backed think tank Institute Rakyat, which was headed by Nurul previously.

“Hush-hush”

According to The Vibes news portal, both Nurul and Yin have been dating for some time but kept it a secret from the public, with only a few close friends and family members in the know.

Nurul Izzah, 42, the Permatang Pauh MP and newly-appointed PKR vice-president, married businessman Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim in 2003 and had two children.

However, the couple broke up and divorced in 2015.

Meanwhile, Yin, 46, was previously married to filmmaker Tan Chui Mui, with whom he has one son. Yin and Tan divorced three years ago.

Yin previously ran strategic communications for the Selangor Menteri Besar’s (MB) office when Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali was the MB. Anwar and Azmin are now arch-enemies in the political world.

Nurul Izzah joined politics when she was 18 and is endearingly known as the Puteri Reformasi.

The moniker came about as her mother, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, led PKR to take on Barisan Nasional (BN) and UMNO following the jailing of Anwar in 1998 over corruption and sexual offences charges. – Aug 6, 2022
