Report: No one is deregistering Umno, just issues with its polls

THE decision by Registrar of Societies (ROS) to invalidate Umno postponing its polls in June would not cause the party to be deregistered.

“ROS announcement that Umno’s decision to postpone its elections being invalid, will not cause the party’s registration to get revoked,” director general Jasri Kasim was reported saying by Chinese daily Sin Chew Daily.

As Umno announced that it was withdrawing support from the Perikatan Nasional Government, ROS stepped in and ruled that Umno’s decision to postpone its party polls by up to 18 months was invalid, adding it has to set a new date for the election.

In a letter to Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, Jasri said the postponement was not valid as the term for its supreme council members elected in 2018 had ended on June 30.

In June, Umno decided to postpone its party polls due to the restrictions imposed during the movement control order (MCO). In a letter dated July 19, ROS had replied that it had no issues with it.

On when Umno should hold its election, Jasri said that the party would have to apply first to postpone its polls and propose a new date to the ROS.

“If not, Umno will have to hold its polls before Dec 31 this year,” he noted.

Umno last had its election on June 30, 2018, and the three-year term of its party president and other office-bearers would have ended on June 30. – Aug 8, 2021.
