Report: “Pro-Muafakat” Khairuddin quits PAS, now Independent MP

FORMER PAS central committee member Datuk Khairuddin Aman Razali has resigned from the party, effective today.

According to Free Malaysia Today, the former plantation and commodities minister said he had met PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan earlier today to hand in his resignation letter.

“With this, I, Khairuddin Aman Razali, membership number 313899, have applied to terminate my PAS membership,” he told a press conference at the Parliament.

In the letter, he also thanked the party for supporting his political struggles. Khairuddin joined as a member in 1989, when he was only 16 years of age.

Khairuddin is said to have clashed with PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang on the latter’s direction in regards to the party joining the Perikatan Nasional coalition.

He, along with Bachok MP Nik Abduk Nik Aziz, were said to be more inclined towards UMNO as opposed to Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin-led Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

While serving as a member of Muhyiddin’s Cabinet, Khairuddin got embroiled in several controversies. Among them was his failure to abide by COVID-19 standard operating procedure during the first movement control order (MCO 1.0) after returning from a trip to Turkey.

He also made a controversial statement last year, urging the Government to re-delineate electoral constituencies to increase the number of Malay-Muslim seats, which goes against electoral laws.

On that note, Khairuddin said that he would remain as an Independent MP (Kuala Nerus). However, he vowed to surrender his monthly allowance as an elected representative to PAS until the next general election.

“This is in line with the agreement I have signed with the party before getting elected to the constituency,” Khairuddin remarked. – March 14, 2022.
