SEGi’s Dentistry programme: Meeting the demands of a growing dental industry in M’sia

MALAYSIA is experiencing a growing demand for dental services, highlighting the importance of producing well-trained and skilled dental professionals.

According to the Malaysian Dental Council, there were 4,647 registered dentists in Malaysia in 2020, projected to increase by 3.3% annually.

SEGi’s Dentistry programme aims to achieve the growing demand for dental services. The SEGi University Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is a five-year programme that aims to produce competent, caring, and knowledgeable dental practitioners.

The programme provides students with a comprehensive education that includes theoretical and practical components and exposure to various dental specialities.

Unlike traditional classroom-based learning, SEGi dental students will learn and practice at the SEGi Oral Health Centre. This cutting-edge teaching facility is designed to provide students with hands-on training to develop the necessary skills and aptitude.

SEGi Oral Health Centre offers students the opportunity to gain clinical exposure working in an actual clinical setting from 8am to 5pm.

Under the close supervision of experienced and skilled lecturers, students will treat walk-in patients. Through this exposure, students develop their knowledge and skills through problem-based clinical cases and lectures, becoming competent, caring, and knowledgeable dental practitioners.

At the SEGi Oral Health Centre, students can access modern clinical facilities and laboratories to support their learning.

The centre features 58 dental units, 53 prosthetics workstations, 31 simulator units, and six dental x-ray facilities. With state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, students can be confident they have everything they need to succeed in their dental studies.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) report, oral diseases are the fourth most expensive to treat globally.

Dental caries (tooth decay) and periodontal disease (gum disease) are Malaysia’s most prevalent oral diseases.

SEGi’s Dentistry programme addresses this issue by providing students with a comprehensive education that includes courses on oral health, paediatric dentistry, prosthetic laboratory, and hands-on experience in clinical practice.

This approach prepares students to identify and manage common oral diseases and provide preventive care to patients.

SEGi’s Dean of Dental Faculty, Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Termizi Zamzuri, explained that SEGi University is one of the few higher education institutions in Malaysia that offer programmes in Dentistry.

“SEGi’s Faculty of Dentistry is not just a place to learn; it’s a place to grow and develop both academically and personally, surrounded by a team of dedicated and experienced professionals,” he elaborated.

“We aim to create a sense of community among our students through mentor-mentee activities, fostering an academic and social engagement environment, leading to a positive and enriching learning experience.”

With a focus on practical experience, exposure to diverse dental specialities, and a comprehensive education that meets the guidelines set by the Malaysian Dental Council, SEGi’s Dentistry programme provides students with opportunities, exposure, and experiences that prepares them for a successful career in dentistry.

As the demand for dental services continues to grow in the country, the programme is well-positioned to meet the needs of the industry and produce highly-skilled and well-trained dental professionals who can make a difference in patients’ lives.
