Six weeks and counting: Foreign selling on Bursa getting elevated

FOREIGN investors remained net sellers on Bursa Malaysia for the week ended July 30 with an outflow amounting to -RM579.73 mil – the sixth consecutive week of net selling.

As the market re-opened last Monday (July 26), foreign investors were net sellers amounting to -RM139.06 mil while local institutions bought +RM48.18 mil net of local equities with retailers as net buyers to the tune of +RM90.88 mil.

“Foreign investors were net seller every day of the week. Their largest foreign outflow was recorded on Friday (July 30) to the tune of -RM325.13 mil,” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report.

Meanwhile, retailers were net buyers every day last week. Their largest net buying was recorded on Monday (July 26) at +RM90.88 mil while their smallest net buying was on Thursday (July 29) to the tune of +RM32.69 mil.

Cumulatively, retailers mopped up +RM258.80 mil worth of equities on the local bourse during the week.

Meanwhile, local institutions recorded cumulative weekly net buying to the tune of +RM320.93 mil. They were net buyers on Monday (July 26), Wednesday (July 28) and Friday (July 30) with the largest net buying occurring on Friday amounting to +RM279.86 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers have cumulatively been the only net buyers in the Malaysian equity market to the tune of +RM8.97 bil while local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of -RM3.43 bil and -RM5.54 bil respectively.

In terms of participation, retail investors, local institutions and foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of -18.95%, -24.52% and -5.86% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, Malaysia posted the biggest outflow at -US$137.19 mil followed by Thailand (-US$86.32 mil), the Philippines (-US$75.59 mil) and Indonesia (-US$71.79).

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Genting Bhd (RM7.95 mil), Genting Malaysia Bhd (RM2.50 mil) and Lotte Chemical Titan Holdings Bhd (RM1.73 mil). – July 26, 2021
