Special surveys being conducted on Covid-19 impact on businesses, individuals

THE Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) is conducting two special online surveys to assess how Covid-19 affects the country’s economy, businesses and people.

The surveys, titled ‘The Effects of Covid-19 on the Economy and Companies/Business Firms (Round 1)’ and ‘The Effects of Covid-19 on the Economy and Individuals (Round 2)’ began yesterday and will run until April 24, the department said in a statement today.

The poll on businesses, consisting of 33 qualitative questions, is open to all companies and firms in the country.

Meanwhile, the survey on the individuals is an extension of the special survey, ‘The Effects of Covid-19 on the Economy and Individuals (Round 1)’, carried out from March 23 to 31 which attracted about 168,000 respondents.

The second round survey comprises 36 questions covering four modules – general module with 24 questions, work module (seven questions), spending module (two questions) and education module (three questions).

All Malaysian residents aged 15 years and above can participate, the department said.

According to DOSM, the two polls are conducted to understand the impact of the Movement Control Order (MCO) and government initiatives in ensuring the country’s economic resilience following Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement yesterday on extending the MCO until April 28.

The department said the findings will be used as input to the government to gauge the effects of the coronavirus on the economy, individuals and businesses, and subsequently be used by the authorities to get a picture of the current situation.

DOSM assured respondents that information collected through the two surveys are subject to the Statistics Act 1965 (Revised – 1989) whereby all information will be treated as confidential and used only for statistical purposes.
