TGV Cinemas to reopen before year-end

MOVIE buffs can sit back, relax and start chomping on their caramel popcorn following the lifting of the conditional movement control order (CMCO) in certain states of Malaysia.

TGV Cinemas will be taking the opportunity to welcome back moviegoers to eight of its cinemas across the nation from Dec 16 onwards.

This is an early Christmas gift for superhero movie lovers, as TGV Cinemas reopens just in time for the highly-anticipated Wonder Woman 1984. Tickets can soon be booked with advanced sales starting as early as today.

However, the health of moviegoers is still the top priority and TGV would like to reassure moviegoers that the necessary safety measures will still be carried out diligently together with the collective responsibility from the customers to follow the standard procedures to maintain cinemas as a safe entertainment destination, TGV Cinemas said in a statement issued today.

Locations that will resume 16 on Dec:

1. TGV Gurney Paragon

2. TGV 1st Avenue

3. TGV AEON Bukit Mertajam

4. TGV AEON Taiping

5. TGV AEON Seri Manjung

6. TGV Mesra Mall

7. TGV Vivacity Megamall

8. TGV Permaisuri Imperial Mall Miri

Their enhanced safety measures include no entry for guests above 37.5° Celsius and those with symptoms, no entry for guests without mask on, check-in for tracing purposes via MySejahtera, and only guests above 12 and below 60 are encouraged to enter.

Physical distance practices include one-metre physical distance markers at queue areas and alternate seating in the auditorium, alternate concession counters to serve our customers, online transactions and cashless payment modes are encouraged, and alternate restroom facilities available.

Crowd management procedures include sanitisation at common touchpoints at least three times daily, hand sanitisers readily available and extended cleaning of auditoriums after each movie.

In October, TGV Cinemas general manager of sales and marketing Mohit Bhargava said since cinemas reopened on July 1 after a full three-month closure, they had already endured deep revenue losses over that period.

“The industry had shown some signs of recovery, but the most recent CMCO put a major strain on our operations.

“Closing and reopening businesses like cinemas is extremely cumbersome, costly and disruptive to our industry, suppliers and customers,” he added.

Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) and TGV Cinemas ceased operation from Nov 2 onwards, and other cinemas suspended their movie screenings and concession operations some time during the month as well.

The decision to temporarily suspend operations at all their cinemas nationwide came as cinemas were running at a massive loss.

The closure was a cohesive decision undertaken by the industry in the light of the recent conditional MCO implementation, which requires cinemas to remain closed, coupled with a lack of new movies releases in the short term, which are essential to attract moviegoers back to the cinemas.

In October, GSC Ceo Koh Mei Lee reportedly said that the industry was incurring losses of RM1.3 mil a day, which translates into a total of loss of RM475 mil in 2020, compared with a profit of RM102 mil in 2019.
