“The audacity”: Netizen pan Najib for calling Tommy Thomas to be barred from travelling

THREE days ago, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak urged the Government to bar ex-Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Tommy Thomas from leaving the country, pending a decision on the Sulu sultanate’s heirs’ claims against Malaysia.

Berating Thomas, he also said that the letter Thomas had sent to the lawyers representing the Sulu sultan’s heirs in 2019 had put Malaysia’s assets at risk of being seized.

Najib was referring to a letter sent by Thomas to the sultanate’s heirs, expressing regret that they have been not paid since the 2013 Lahad Datu incursion, adding the Government had offered to settle the multi-billion dollar claim with a RM48,000 compensation payment.

“As the Pakatan Harapan (PH)-era Cabinet members have kept mum on the Sulu sultan’s heirs’ claims and Thomas’ letter, it’s only fair for the Government to take precautionary measures to stop Thomas from leaving the country until the truth can be uncovered,” Free Malaysia Today reported him as saying.

However, the irony of the situation did not escape netizens who reminded Najib on how he got to leave the country several times despite him being convicted twice for the SRC International Sdn Bhd scandal.

“The irony of it… he, as a convicted criminal can go abroad and has the gumption to say this,” said lawyer-activist Siti Kasim.

Echoing Siti’s sentiments, user LilMeera added:

(So says the convict with the thickest skin around)

Netizen FSJ retorted:

In December last year, the Court of Appeal has upheld the conviction as well as 12-year jail term and RM210 mil fine against Najib in the RM42 mil SRC International corruption case.

A three-person bench chaired by Justice Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil unanimously dismissed the former prime minister’s appeal to reverse the guilty verdict and sentencing over seven charges of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering.

Hilarious Najib

“We dismiss the appeal on all seven charges and affirm the conviction,” Justice Abdul Karim said on Wednesday (Dec 8).

Abdul Karim had also dismissed Najib’s argument that he had acted on national interest, rebuking him by saying “there is no national interest here, only national embarrassment”.

On that note, user RSV lamented that laws in Malaysia seem to be fragmented in Malaysia, with different people getting differing treatment. “It’s not two rules anymore in Malaysia…its berbagai bagai rules (many rules).
