To cull or suffice to neuter stray dogs on the prowl: What say animal lovers after this Klang dog chase?

STRAY canines can be a nuisance. Try control its population by culling and many will call it barbaric and inhumane. Left unchecked and packs of wild dogs are left to terrorise innocent bystanders.

This is the conundrum highlighted on the X platform by social media influencer JalalMisai (@@jllmisai) who pinpointed the situation in Klang as “chronic”. He added that many motorcycle accidents had occurred due to stray dogs’ “chases”.

Sharing a video purportedly shot in Kampung Rantau Panjang, a boy was seen running for dear life to the extent of vaulting a high gate to escape the attention of a stray dog.

Many netizens were quick to voice their dissatisfaction, especially at NGOs and animal lovers who protest when stray dogs are culled. Many asked what solutions would these animal lovers suggest?

One recalled helping to rescue a schoolgirl who was being chased by a pack of strays.

Another could not hide his contempt by contending that animal lovers will be quick to spin it by accusing the boy for having provoked the animal.

One commenter echoed this sentiment while calling for a massive demonstration to bring attention to this problem of strays terrorising neighbourhoods.

Another netizen argued that even if there was a drive to neuter these stray animals, the fact remains these strays will still chase humans and cause all sorts of inconveniences.

One noted that the boy should not have run like an Olympian as he risked getting hurt.

With some posting unverified comments that the boy in the video did indeed suffer injuries – notably “broken his hand” or “bruised on the thigh or leg for hitting the edge of the gate”.

It is a tough question. No doubt these wild animals do pose a public nuisance. Worse yet is when motorcyclists are chased by a pack of strays and this leads to an accident.

As the many comments pointed out, the animal lover brigade does not proffer a workable solution as these animals continue to be a public nuisance.

Animal lovers have been very vocal, especially in light of Kopi’s shooting (a stray which had captured the hearts of Malaysians when a video of it playing with a kitten went viral) that a more humane solution needed to be found.

Neutering is one of them but what happens after? Who will care for these strays or will they just be let out again?

There are no easy answers. Until then, it would appear that the problem would persist. – Dec 3, 2024
