Tok Mat to Umno: Stand by AGM’s decisions, reject “vested interests”

ANY decision to be made by Umno in the upcoming special leadership meeting must be agreed by the supreme council, in line with the mandate given by the delegates in the last annual general assembly (AGM).

“This includes our decision to remain as part of the Government and rejecting overtures by other parties or individuals that go against Umno’s principles.

“All decisions agreed upon in the last AGM remains in force and the party supreme council should stand by it,” its deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said, in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged the Government to reconvene the Parliament within 14 days, in line with Istana Negara’s decree for the august house to reopen soon.

“My party always upholds the royal institution and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has made it clear that the Parliament must be reconvened soon to address the pandemic situation and ensure accountability on the administration’s conduct.

“The monarch’s statement is similar to our previous calls. So, there is no need to waste time trying to find different interpretations to the word ‘segera’ and ‘secepat mungkin’ as uttered by His Majesty,” he was reported saying.

The Bagan Datuk MP added he would call for a special meeting with the party’s top leadership to decide on their next course of action.

Defend M’sia democratic institutions

It was speculated that Zahid and his former boss, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had endorsed PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the premiership late last year, without seeking Umno supreme council’s consent.

It triggered criticism within certain sections of the party but Zahid dismissed the matter during the AGM, adding Umno will never work with Anwar and DAP.

On related matter, Mohamad Hasan lauded the decree issued by Conference of Rulers and called for the Government to reconvene the Parliament.

“Zahid has issued a statement on it and I wish to add on by saying that both our constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy must be respected.

“Therefore, the Parliament must be reconvened and God willing, this view will be echoed in our supreme council meeting soon,” the Rantau state assemblyman remarked. – June 22, 2021.
